Providing a one stop calendar for events in the Houghton & Keweenaw County areas. Brought to you by the vendors of Chassell Farmers Market to encourage community gatherings, as well as local business and farming efforts.
The film Gather (75 minutes) explores the growing movement amongst Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through food sovereignty, while battling the trauma of centuries of genocide. The film will be shown in Noblet 144 of the Forestry Building. Refreshments will be hosted by Keweenaw Land Trust.
Following the film, discussion will be led by Sierra Ayres and Rachael Pressley. Ayers is Program Coordinator for Walking the Path Together in the Department of Social Work at Northern Michigan University and a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Lake Superior Band of Ojibwe. She graduated from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis in 2019 with a Masters in Social Work, and from the University of Michigan in 2017 with a B.A. in Sociology. Rachael Pressley is a Regional Planner at the Western U.P. Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) where she works with local communities to collaboratively plan rural food systems, hazard mitigation and climate adaptation, and accessible recreation. She earned a B.S. in Geology from Michigan Tech in 2014.
