DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a presentation by Oliver Loode of the Uralic Centre for Indigenous Peoples (Tallinn\, Estonia) Tuesday (29 Apr) at 6:00 pm at the Finnish American Heritage Center. Loode is visiting the area to promote his organization and create dialogue with the community regarding application for the designation as a Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture. If awarded\, Hancock would be the first North American community with that designation.\nLoode\, a graduate of Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania\, has been involved numerous ethnic and indigenous peoples’ programs\, and has been an Expert Member of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)\, and has been the Head of Cultural Programmes at the Minority Rights Group International.\nLoode is a leading member of the Uralic Center (Tallinn\, Estonia) and the creator of the Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture program. He recognizes that Hancock is the hub of Finnish American history and culture\, which includes Finns\, Saami\, Kvens (Finnish speakers from Arctic Norway)\, Karelians\, Estonians and Hungarians. He hopes to meet as many residents as possible\, regardless of ethnic background\, but is interested in community development. Loode’s professional career includes tourism development and marketing consultant\, focusing on cultural tourism and place marketing.\nThe program is free and open to the public. Loode’s presentation will be followed by Q&A. The event is sponsored by the Copper Country Finns & Friends and the Finnish American Heritage Center.

DESCRIPTION:The Keweenaw Family Resource Center playgroup will meet at the Horizons School in Mohawk. \nPlaygroup is for families in the area with children birth through 4 years of age. The playgroups provide an opportunity for children and parents to play in an environment that is supportive and nurturing. Morning playgroups are offered in the communities of Houghton\, and Mohawk.   \nPlaygroups are structured to allow children to explore and play at their own pace. We encourage parents to interact with their children at all times\, especially during snack time\, exploration time and during clean up. Playgroup coordinators are there to facilitate the sessions\, model appropriate adult behavior\, and interact with children in ways which will assist them in their learning and development of social skills. We strive for a positive experience for everyone. Playgroups are open to all area families. \nWhat to Expect at Playgroup:\n\nFree Play Time\, where children can choose to play with any toys they like.\nCircle time\, where the children are encouraged to sit in a group circle and sing songs and do finger plays.\nExploration time\, when children learn new things by free creation-finger painting\, coloring\, drawing.\nSnack time\, when children sit at the table with the other children and have a healthy snack.\nClean up time\, where both the children and their parents are required to participate. DESCRIPTION:The Keweenaw Family Resource Center playgroup will meet at the Tree House Indoor Playground. \nPlaygroup is for families in the area with children birth through 4 years of age. The playgroups provide an opportunity for children and parents to play in an environment that is supportive and nurturing. Morning playgroups are offered in the communities of Houghton\, and Mohawk.   \nPlaygroups are structured to allow children to explore and play at their own pace. We encourage parents to interact with their children at all times\, especially during snack time\, exploration time and during clean up. Playgroup coordinators are there to facilitate the sessions\, model appropriate adult behavior\, and interact with children in ways which will assist them in their learning and development of social skills. We strive for a positive experience for everyone. Playgroups are open to all area families. \nWhat to Expect at Playgroup:\n\nFree Play Time\, where children can choose to play with any toys they like.\nCircle time\, where the children are encouraged to sit in a group circle and sing songs and do finger plays.\nExploration time\, when children learn new things by free creation-finger painting\, coloring\, drawing.\nSnack time\, when children sit at the table with the other children and have a healthy snack.\nClean up time\, where both the children and their parents are required to participate. The snack is put away\, the toys put where they belong\, and the exploration area is tidied up.\n\nGet notification reminders for our playgroups by going to our event calendar\, then adding selected events to your Google calendar!
